Cervical pain or more commonly known as neck pain is more common than some may think, effecting 45% of american workers. Neck pain is caused by a number of different injuries disorders and or diseases and can involve the tissue muscles and or bones in the neck.  Whiplash known as a neck injury, a pinch nerve or a herniated disk in the neck  all cause minor and severe pain. Neck pain can also come from common infections and viruses of the throat that leading to your lymph nodes and when your glands swell, neck pain can occur. Pain in your neck can be associated with headaches, pain in your shoulders and numbness or tingling in your arms. Neck pain is also very commonly associated with upper back pain or lower back pain.

A few ways to prevent neck pain would be number one prevent any injury of the neck being careful during sporting activities and anything where your body could have a collision impacting the way your neck can be thrown backwards then forwards resulting in a whiplash injury. Whiplash can cause minor to severe pain n your neck and shoulders along with major and minor headaches.

A  small thing you can do to prevent neck pain that have a large impact would be making sure you are sleeping with a firm pillow. You want a firm pillow that fully supports your neck as to make sure you neck is in a natural position while you are sleeping. If you pillow is to flat you may risk straining your neck while you are sleeping, this will result in a sore neck over time or waking up with a kink in your neck. Another great way to prevent neck pain while sleeping is to ensure you are NOT sleeping on your stomach. Sleeping on you stomach I have to assume you are not also sleeping face down, leaving your neck turned to a full stretched position the entire night. The best way to sleep would be on your side or your back with a firm pillow.

Proper posture is another small thing you can work on that has a huge impact. Sometimes we are in such a habit we do not even realize that our daily posture is causing stress to our neck and back. Make sure you're not straining your neck while working on the computer or doing other daily activities. If you are working at a desk make sure you are getting up and walking around for a few minuets every hour to give your neck a break and to ensure good circulation and proper blood flow. When sitting at your desk on on the computer make sure you are keeping your head up, not slouched and your shoulders back. A proper typing posture can save a lot of neck pain and strain.
